Beamer was asked Tuesday if Smart was ever one of his neighbors, a question Beamer quickly shot down. ![]() So there's a lot of things to that.”īeamer spoke last week about facing off with former Georgia assistant Sam Pittman, and Beamer shared the two used to live in the same subdivision together during their time with the Bulldogs. It's usually the first SEC game most years. “South Carolina's always historically played Georgia, you know, really hard. And just creating an environment of competition for their program to compete at a high level. “He's created a lot of energy through his program through enthusiasm, their staff, they have an excellent staff at South Carolina. He was interested in coming and I thought it would be a great opportunity to jump into SEC and be part of our program, and he did,” Smart said. “When I hired Shane, I'd known him for a long time. Since Beamer arrived at South Carolina as head coach, Smart has seen Beamer and his staff put the work in to try and make Gamecocks a contender in the SEC East. Smart explained on Monday that his familiarity with Beamer made him a natural pick as Smart put together his first staff as a head coach. “When you talk about all the places that I've been as a coach and coaches that I've taken things from as far as this organization and how we try and structure stuff, a lot of it, you know, came from my time with Kirby and certainly really appreciative of that opportunity that he gave me and everything I learned from him.” I mean, we do a lot of things differently as well,” Beamer said. “Seeing how he handled coaches, seeing how he handled the day-to-day stuff, the recruiting part of it, practice, I mean, there's a lot of things we do here that are directly from things that I took from my time at Georgia. Still, Smart made an impression on Beamer that he carries with him today. ![]() Beamer acknowledged the Bulldogs struggled early on - Beamer pointed out the team’s disastrous showing against Nicholls State in Week 2 followed by losses to Vanderbilt and Georgia Tech later in the year - but noted how Smart and the staff went about their business in recruiting and building the program up.īy Smart’s second season in Athens, the Bulldogs won 13 games, captured an SEC championship and played for a national title.īeamer left Georgia after the 2016 season for a spot on Lincoln Riley’s staff at Oklahoma. Shane Beamer had 16 years of coaching at the collegiate level under his belt when he joined Kirby Smart’s first staff at Georgia in December 2015.
